Royal Air Force Typhoon jets have conducted a mission with France's air force in a joint strike on an underground arms cache in Syrian territory operated by the IS group, as stated by the British defence ministry.

The location, identified by surveillance, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was situated in hills just above Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a several entry passages down to the facility... initial indications suggest the strike was effective," the ministry announced.

There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the operation conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were backed up by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

The Islamic State group - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - imposed militant control over parts of both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike shows the UK's leading role, and commitment to operate in unison with our allies, to eradicate any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary the minister said.

RAF aircraft have conducted overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State after its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank all the members of our armed forces involved in this mission for their professionalism and their courage," he said. "They were part of numerous UK service members stationed over the holidays. This operation, to take out terrorist threats who endanger our way of life, shows how UK forces are always on standby, all year round, keeping Britain secure domestically and strong abroad."

During December, the United States armed forces carried out what it called a "large-scale strike" on Islamic State objectives in the country, subsequent to an ambush claimed the lives of two US troops and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The United Nations reports Daesh still has roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in Iraq and Syria.
