The EU might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the US on five European individuals involved in combating online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as the French president charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions were placed on individuals that were at the heart of campaigns to enact legislation governing American tech companies.
“For far too long, European activists have led organised efforts to pressure US companies to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” stated a senior US official online. “This government will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the decision.
The restrictions were imposed this week against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
The DSA is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders contend the regulations are necessary to control inflammatory language and disinformation.
This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a much broader existing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and European institutions.
