Fresh analysis reveals that patients who discontinue new slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional lifestyle plans.
Research printed in a major medical journal shows that while overweight people often shed a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals buying such medications need to be cognizant of the risk of fast rebound weight gain when the therapy is stopped," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain implies a return to pre-treatment mass in about a year and a half.
Analyzing Approaches
The study, which reviewed dozens of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the outcomes of these new drugs with older methods.
Researchers note that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise typically experience a less rapid weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
Understanding the Fast Regain
Nutrition scientists believe the mode of action of the drugs explains the heightened regain.
GLP-1 drugs mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates hunger.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels several times higher than normal may cause the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and may also lessen sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Stopping of this medication leads to appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating far more likely."
An Ongoing Disease?
The NHS advise the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
Professionals say that, given the high risk of weight regain, the treatment might need to be long-term.
This opinion is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "highlight the persistent nature of obesity," akin to managing conditions like diabetes.
User Experiences
Individuals who have stopped the medication describe a powerful return of hunger.
"It felt as if a switch flipping and I was suddenly ravenous," recalled one woman.
This challenge is compounded if individuals have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Significant Use
Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with desire remaining high.
- Use is greater among women than men.
- The middle-aged age group shows the highest level of interest.
- Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, experts emphasize that while the jabs are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and maintained weight loss hinges on combined behavioural changes.
